What Are The Typical Symptoms Of Elbow Pain?

Elbow pain can present with a variety of symptoms, including: Aching or Stiffness: Discomfort when bending or straightening the arm, especially after activity. Sharp Pain: Sudden pain when lifting, gripping, or twisting objects. Weakness: Difficulty gripping or holding onto objects, often due to pain or strain. Swelling: Puffiness around the elbow joint, particularly after repetitive movements. Tingling or Numbness: Sensations that may extend from the elbow down to the forearm or hand, often indicating nerve involvement. Reduced Range of Motion: Difficulty fully bending or extending the arm without discomfort.

Why Does My Elbow Hurt When I Grip Or Lift?

There could be several common conditions that are causing your pain: Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Inflammation or small tears in the tendons on the outside of the elbow, often from repetitive gripping or wrist movements. Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Similar to tennis elbow but affecting the tendons on the inside of the elbow, typically caused by overuse in activities that involve wrist flexion. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the ulnar nerve (often referred to as the "funny bone" nerve) at the elbow, leading to tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hand and fingers. Olecranon Bursitis (Student’s Elbow): Inflammation of the bursa (fluid-filled sac) at the tip of the elbow, usually caused by prolonged pressure or injury. Elbow Tendonitis: General inflammation or irritation of the tendons around the elbow, usually due to overuse or repetitive motions. Ligament Sprains or Tears: Damage to the ligaments around the elbow, often caused by trauma or excessive force, such as during sports.

Treatment Options & How Physiotherapy Can Help:

I offer a range of treatments specifically designed for elbow pain, which may include: Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to improve joint movement, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain. Exercise Therapy: Strengthening and stretching exercises focused on the muscles and tendons surrounding the elbow to enhance tissue capacity and reduce pain long term. Taping and Bracing: Use of supportive braces or taping techniques to alleviate pressure and support the elbow during recovery. Pain Management Techniques: Tips on applying ice to reduce inflammation or heat to ease muscle tightness around the elbow, advice on using elbow supports or braces, and suggestions on discussing with your GP the most appropriate pain relief if discomfort persists. Acupuncture/Dry Needling: Targeting specific muscle knots (trigger points) around the elbow with fine needles to release tension and promote healing. Lifestyle Modification Techniques: Adjusting the way you perform repetitive tasks, modifying exercise routines, or using ergonomic equipment to avoid aggravating elbow pain.

My 5-Stage Approach ensures your treatment is tailored to your specific condition and recovery goals, guiding you through pain relief, mobility restoration, and long-term prevention.
