What Are The Typical Symptoms Of Hip Pain?
Hip pain can show up in different ways, depending on what’s causing it. You might experience: Aching or Stiffness: A dull, persistent ache, especially noticeable after sitting for a while or waking up. Sharp Pain: Sudden pain when you move from sitting to standing or after physical activity. Groin Pain: Discomfort felt in the front of the hip or groin area. Radiating Pain: Pain that travels down to the thigh, buttocks, or knee. Reduced Range of Motion: Struggling to rotate, bend, or fully move your hip without discomfort. Clicking or Popping Sensations: Feeling or hearing clicks in your hip joint, sometimes accompanied by pain.
What Causes Pain In The Hip Joint?
Many of my clients come to me with hip pain related to these conditions: Hip Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip, causing pain and swelling. Hip Osteoarthritis: Wear and tear on the cartilage in the hip joint, leading to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility. Hip Impingement (Femoroacetabular Impingement/FAI): You can experience either Cam impingement, where extra bone growth on the femoral head prevents smooth rotation, or Pincer impingement, where excess bone growth on the acetabulum creates a deep socket that pinches the femoral head, causing pain during activities like squatting or twisting. Tendonitis/Tendinopathy: Inflammation of the tendons around the hip, often from overuse or repetitive movements. Labral Tear: A tear in the cartilage around the hip joint, which can cause pain in the groin and feelings of instability. Muscle Strains: Overstretching or tearing muscles around the hip, often in the groin or buttocks area.
Treatment Options & How Physiotherapy Can Help:
I offer a variety of treatments to help relieve your hip pain and improve function, based on your specific condition: Manual Therapy: hands-on techniques to reduce muscle tightness and improve joint mobility. Exercise Therapy: Strengthening and mobility exercises are key to improving hip stability, tissue capacity, and reducing long-term pain. Postural and Movement Retraining: I’ll help you adjust how you move during daily activities to take the strain off your hips. Acupuncture/Dry Needling: Targeting tight muscles with needles can relieve tension, reduce pain, and improve overall mobility. Pain Management Techniques: Suggestions on when to use heat or cold for hip stiffness or inflammation, advice on hip supports or cushions to relieve pressure, and guidance on speaking to your GP about appropriate pain relief medication if symptoms persist. Lifestyle Modification Techniques: adjust your work or daily environment to avoid putting stress on your hips. Sometimes modifying your daily movements or exercises can help relieve hip pain, and I’ll show you how to do this effectively.
My 5-Stage Approach covers everything from pain relief to long-term prevention, so you can maintain good hip function in the long run.
